Time pressure, perfectionism, the struggle for recognition. Of Curious Nature presents two new choreographies by Phoebe Jewitt and Helge Letonja, exploring the tensions and frictions created by the accelerated pace of contemporary life.

Through her dynamic movement language, choreographer Phoebe Jewitt, whose work White Rabbit at Theater Luzern recently drew attention, explores the human drive for recognition, influence and upward mobility. She draws parallels between the mechanisms of contemporary society and the hierarchies and power struggles of a Baroque court. Movement becomes a language of desire, in which bodies, will and power become relentlessly entangled.

Set to an original composition by Minouche Ninh Briot, which transforms Baroque forms into a contemporary, high-energy soundscape, a fascinating, timeless landscape emerges between the familiar and the unfamiliar. It is a world of bitter comedy and grotesque absurdity, in which the desire to rise to the top appears at once ridiculous and unsettling.

In his new production, Helge Letonja explores with the OCN company the possibility of a new physical culture of time. He contrasts this with a life lived under pressure and in a state of constant overload, examining the imbalances that emerge in the ways bodies relate to one another.

Together with the dancers, Letonja explores the simultaneity of the different rhythms that shape our lives, bringing them into a striking contrast. The choreography unfolds between the pulsating beats of acid techno and Maurice Ravel’s famous Boléro, whose slow crescendo, driven by the repetition of its musical motif, creates an irresistible pull.

Woven through this music, the choreography brings to the fore a radically reduced pulse and a primal physical force, together reflecting the shifting forces of life. Between form and chaos, order and unfolding, overcoming and the eternal return of human desire.
